Mastic Gum is a resin derived from mastic trees of southern Chios in the Mediterranean region. These trees are native to the Mediterranean region from Morocco and Iberia to southern France and Turkey, as well as Syria and Israel and Canary Islands. These trees drip masticha resin when their bark is torn. Cultivated for its aromatic resin, Mastic is an evergreen shrub in the Pistacio family (Pistacia lentiscus), and natives have found many uses of mastic.
In Chios, the production of mastic is controlled by a collective known as the “Mastichochoria”, which is a co-operative of medieval villages locataed in the southern are of the island.
Natives of the Mediterranean region chew mastic resin to sooth the stomach and freshen breath. For several thousand years, mastic has been used as a gastrointestinal medicine. The benefits of mastic gum have been proven to ease high blood pressure and reduce heart attack risk due to its ability to absorb cholesterol. The oil from mastic gum has anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties and is often used in various ointments for skin.
The resin of mastic trees is used in many mouthwashes and toothpastes, for its known ability to reduce bacterial plaque. In 1985, a study found that mastic can reduce bacterial plaque in the mouth by over 40%. In 1998, two other studies discovered the antibacterial and anti-fungal properties, as well as findings showing mastic can heal peptic ulcers by killing Helicobacter pylori.
